Pumas are traveling to Hawaii this week to compete in the “ASA Kailamahine Tournament”.  They will enjoy some of the Hawaiian culture along with doing what they do best “Softball”.

Oxnard High’s Demi Meza slides toward home to score her second run of the game during Tuesday’s CIF-SS Division I second-round softball game against Pacifica/Garden Grove at Oxnard. Oxnard won the game, 3-2.

Demi Meza walked off the field with her jersey caked in dirt from head to toe. For most teenagers, that would be an issue for their mother to deal with.

But not for Meza.

The Oxnard High junior shortstop does her own laundry and considers dust stains a minor inconvenience if the end result is a victory.

Meza contributed to each of Oxnard’s runs on Tuesday as the Yellowjackets used their aggressiveness on the basepaths to beat Pacifica/Garden Grove 3-2 in the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Division I softball playoffs at Oxnard High.

Oxnard’s three runs all resulted from squeeze bunts, with Meza scoring twice and laying down a bunt for an RBI.

“I love squeeze plays,” Meza said. “I practice bunts all the time and love them because a bunt is so easy and it puts pressure on the corners to go and crash. And scoring on a squeeze play is just as much fun.”

Oxnard (23-1-1), which extended its winning streak to 15 games, will face Esperanza in the quarterfinals on Thursday in Anaheim.

Esperanza upset second-seeded Mater Dei 3-2 in 10 innings on a bases-loaded walk.

Prior to this season, Oxnard had never advanced beyond the first round of the playoffs.

But Oxnard forced the issue by forcing Pacifica’s defense to make plays from the very first batter.

Kathryn Pilpil led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple to left field and scored on a squeeze bunt by Meza.

The umpire was ready to call Pilpil out at the plate just as the ball trickled out of the catcher’s glove.

Pacifica (23-9) compounded its woes by trying to throw out Meza at second base with nobody covering the bag. Meza came around to score sliding when the ball sailed into center field.

Oxnard added its final run in the fourth inning when Meza led off with a walk, made it to third on a steal and scored on a squeeze bunt by Samantha Carmona.

“We are a quick team and the girls know to be ready to go at all times,” Oxnard coach Paul Tinoco said. “They know there is no hesitation. It’s just get there.”

Pacifica, which had its 13-game winning streak snapped, threatened to tie the game in the fifth inning. But the Empire League champions could only manage two runs on RBI singles by Cierra Henson and Erika Campbell.

The damage could have been worse for Oxnard if not for another good defensive play earlier in the inning by Leilani Tupua. The center fielder completed a double play by firing a perfect throw to third base to tag the runner for the second out after catching a fly ball.

Oxnard finally escaped the inning when right-hander Delilah Ramirez replaced lefty Alexis Edwards in the circle and recorded the final out.

“Our plan was to throw Lexi for five, and we maybe stretched her a little too long,” Tinoco said. “But the second and third time up, good teams make adjustments. Delilah comes in and it’s a whole different pitch — different spins, different angle.”

Oxnard’s four seniors received even more good news after the game was over.

They were prepared to skip grad night at Disneyland on Thursday to play in the quarterfinal game. But school officials worked out a plan to let them arrive on their own since they will already be in the Anaheim area.

“We told them grad night is the least of their worries,” Tinoco said. “Win the game and then go have fun at grad night. That is our plan.”
